Daily Itinerary
Day 1 Saturday, January 7 Hotel Diego de Almagro   Punta Arenas, Chile

Greeting in Punta Arenas Airport by Kuyay Travel Tour Host & transfer to Hotel Diego de Almagro, located on the Magellan Strait. Around 3:00 pm we will take an afternoon boat trip to visit the Magdalena Island Penguin Colony, a natural habitat of more than 120,000 Magellan penguins and one of the largest southern penguin colonies in Chile. We will have two hours of sailing through the “Estrecho de Magallanes” where it is possible to have astonishing panoramic views of Punta Arenas, Tierra del Fuego plains and the oilfields of Cabo Negro or Laredo Bay. Once on the island, remember to stay on the foot paths and give the penguins the right of way, as they are constantly going down to the ocean to fish and returning to their nests. Late afternoon transfer back to Punta Arenas.

Day 2 Sunday, January 8 Refugio Paine Grande  Torres del Paine National Park  (B, D)

After breakfast we will depart around 8:00 am, beginning by driving along the Magellan Strait. We enter the Pampa, where huge, iconic sheep ranches drove the development of the region at the end of the 19th Century. In this unique landscape in the Patagonian Pampa we can witness the local wildlife, filled with birds, guanacos and lesser rheas. The trip will take roughly 5 hours until we reach the Entrance to Torres del Paine National Park, where we will visit the Information Center to listen to a brief informative talk to learn about the formation of the granite massifs, their location, and of course about our hike in the park. You will have free time for lunch (not included) and then we will take a short walk of around 2 hours to the Horns Lookout, where we will get our first closeup views of the “Cuernos”. Upon returning we will take a catamaran on Lake Pehoe to the western shore of the lake, where we will have shared lodging and dinner at Lodge Paine Grande.
Day 3 Monday, January 9 Refugio Paine Grande  Torres del Paine National Park  (B, Box L, D)

Today's hike will be 22 kilometers (roundtrip), taking around 8 hours. We begin by bordering Cerro Paine Grande, the tallest peak in the park, passing by the Laguna de los Patos, or Duck Lagoon, to reach Lago Grey. We will have the opportunity to observe large, blue icebergs floating in the lake, carved into fascinating shapes by the forces of nature. We continue until we reach the Grey Glacier Lookout, where we can see the huge glacier, originating in the Southern Ice Field, with a face of nearly 5 kilometers wide, and one of the most important glaciers inside the national park. We return by the same trail back to Refugio Paine Grande for dinner and a good night's sleep before continuing the “W” in the morning.
Day 4 Tuesday, January 10 Refugio Los Cuernos  Torres del Paine National Park  (B, Box L, D)

Today's hike will be nearly 19 kilometers, taking around 10 hours. After a good breakfast, we head east, along Lake Pehoe, around the southern foot of Paine Grande, and passing by Lake Skottsberg. After nearly 8 kilometers we arrive at the entrance to the Frenchman's Valley, which for many people is one of the most beautiful treks in the park. We will hike through a forest and get to see the horns from a different angle, as we pass between the Horns and Paine Grande. After a little more than 5 kilometers we will reach the British Base Camp, where we will have our box lunch. After lunch there is an option to continue hiking another 1.2 kilometers to a lookout which offers better views of the Shark's Fin, Carolina Point, the Cathedral and other hills. Then we head back down the valley to continue the trail eastward, along the shores of Lake Nordenskjold to our destination of the day of Refugio Los Cuernos, in the shadow of the Horns, where we will have our dinner. Once again, we will have shared lodging tonight.

Day 5 Wednesday, January 11 Refugio Chileno  Torres del Paine National Park  (B, Box L, D)
This morning after breakfast we continue our hike, which will be 19 kilometers , taking an estimated 10 hours. We continue east along Lake Nordenskjold and at the foot of Cerro Paine Chico, which separates the Horns and the Towers. We make our way through the “Paso de Los Vientos” (aptly named because of the high winds!) toward the Ascencio Valley , reaching the Refugio Chileno, where we will have our lunch. We will leave our packs and continue northwest to one of the most spectacular views of the Torres, or Towers, at the Las Torres Basecamp lookout. After contemplating the magnitude and silence of our surroundings, we return to the refuge for our dinner and a hot shower.
Day 6 Thursday, January 12 Hotel Quijote    El Calafate, Argentina   (B)

This morning we finish our hike of the “W” by heading south for nearly 6 kiloters, taking roughly 2 hours, to reach the Hosteria Las Torres, where our transfer will be waiting to take us the the border town of Cerro Castillo (1 hour). Here we will make a stop for lunch (not included). Then we will cross the border into Argentina and continue through the Pampa to reach the city of El Calafate in rougly 3 hours. We will check into the Hotel Quijote, one block off the main avenue, where you will have free time to shop and explore the town. Dinner not included tonight.
Day 7 Friday, January 13 Hosteria Infinito Sur   El Chalten, Argentina   (B)

This morning we will have a transfer of around 3 hours to the small town of El Chalten, at the base of the majestic Mount Fitz Roy, and considered the trekking capital of Argentina. We will check into our hosteria, leave our luggage and hit the trail, hiking 8 kilometers each way to the Lake Torre Lookout. This small lake is fed by a glacier at the foot of Cerro Torre, which is the steepest, most difficult needle for climbers in the park. We then return by the same trail back to town, where you should still have time to walk around this town dedicated 100% to backpacking and outdoor sports. Lodging at the Hosteria Infinito Sur.
Day 8 Saturday, January 14 Hosteria Infinito Sur   El Chalten, Argentina   (B)

Today's trailhead is located at the end of Avenida San Martin, in the Madsen campground at the north end of town. The hike is 24 kilometers (roundtrip), taking around 10 hours total. During the first hour the trail is fairly steep until entering the valley of the Del Salto creek, which heads towards Mount Fitz Roy. The Nires, or Antartic Beech trees, begin to increase in numbers around the trail, and after about an hour and a half we will reach a natural lookout point on the top of a rock, with signage describing the landscape presented in front of us. The trail continues, criss-crossing the creek, until we reach the drainage area of the Modre and Hija (Mother and Daughter) Lagoons. Approximately 4 hours into the hike we reach the Poincenot Base Camp, and then cross the Rio Blanco to reach the basecamp of the same name, which is used only for climbers. From here the trail climbs around 400 meters in altitude until we make it to the Laguna de los Tres, where the trail ends in the glacial morraine, offering extraordinary views of the lake and the Glaciar de los Tres. This is the closest we will get to the granite wall of Mount Fitz Roy and its needled spires. At the base of the morraine, you can continue by a path which borders the lagoon, where you can appreciate the desolate Laguna Sucia and its hanging glaciers. We then return to El Chalten by the same trail for a good night's sleep to prepare for our next adventure.
Day 9 Sunday, January 15 Hotel Quijote    El Calafate, Argentina   (B)

This morning you have the option to take another hike of only 1 hour to reach the Condor's Lookout, which offers great morning views of El Chalten and the entire Fitz Roy range. The trailhead is located at the southern edge of town, where we arrived, at the Information Center , and is well marked. Then we will have our transfer back to El Calafate (3 hours approx.), where you will have the remainder of the afternoon free.
Day 10 Monday, January 16 Hotel Quijote    El Calafate, Argentina   (B, D)
Got your crampons ready? Actually, they provide them, so don't worry! At 9:00 we sail across the Rico Arm onboard the boat “Tehuelche”, where upon reaching the the opposite shore of Perito Moreno Glacier the guides will welcome us. After checking our gear, we walk following the lateral moraine towards the centre of the glacier. After an hour, we reach the point where we begin our walk on the ice. During the walk we will be introduced to a number of features within the ice. We wil hike for about 3 hours and spend free time for lunch (not included). Back on the moraine we decend to catch the boat around 3:00 pm. Once back in El Calafate we will have our Farewell Dinner.
Day 11 Tuesday, January 17 Buenos Aires, Home   (B)
This morning you will have a transfer to the airport outside of El Calafate for your flight to Buenos Aires to continue your vacation or to catch your international flight home.
